Over a round of hold'em (yes, my break is over, and yes, I have been winning), we began discussing Newman's career and lamenting that no one could fill his shoes. One of my colleagues disputed that, saying that Matt Damon could pull off Cool Hand Luke. Perhaps, I intoned, but not Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, and certainly not The Sting. This led to a wide-ranging speculation on who could fill what roles in which movies. Here are a few that I came up with:
- Cat On A Hot Tin Roof: Maybe Damon, but who do you get to play Elizabeth Taylor's role? (That was actually the main discussion point.) Lindsay Lohan at her sober and well-behaved best might could, as could a younger Sean Young, IMO. But I think good money here might be Kate Beckinsale or Jennifer Love Hewitt. I'm not interested in dyeing Renee Zellweger's hair for this one... (plus who will play Burl Ives?)
- Cool Hand Luke: Damon perhaps, but a better choice would probably be Matthew Mcconnaughey. Ed Harris could play the role of George Kennedy and Morgan Freeman could play the warden, in a twist.
- The Sting: no Damon here (but probably good in Redford's role). Open to suggestions on this one.
